Norwegian solar energy company Scatec has commenced commercial operations at the 273 MW Grootfontein solar park in South Africa.

The facility is backed by a 20-year power purchase agreement and is expected to generate approximately 700 GWh annually. According to the company, this output could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 630,000 metric tons each year.

This project marks Scatec's first venture in the Western Cape and is also the first solar power plant to become operational under the fifth round of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). Scatec holds a 51 percent stake in the project and will also oversee its operations.
