::Hong Kongers vote in an election where the turnout is in focus, as grief and anger linger over the deadly high-rise fire

::All candidates running for the parliamentary vote were vetted as 'patriots' by the China-backed government

Security was tight in the northern district of Tai Po, close to the border with mainland China, where the fire engulfed seven towers at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate less than two weeks ago. Roughly 100 police patrolled the area around Wang Fuk Court early on Sunday.

The city is holding elections for the Legislative Council, in which only candidates vetted as "patriots" by the China-backed Hong Kong government may run.

Eager to contain public dismay, authorities have launched criminal and corruption investigations into the blaze, which killed at least 159 people.

A handwritten sign at a memorial site near the burned-out towers said authorities planned to clear the area after the election concludes close to midnight.
