Market definition: Managed IoT connectivity services
Gartner defines managed IoT connectivity services as "a market that enables secured
connectivity, data collection, analysis and additional decision services. Managed IoT
connectivity services are delivered fully managed, including dedicated help desk and
project and service management capabilities, although hybrid managed and self-managed could also apply as delivery models."
Mandatory IoT features assessed in the Gartner report include:
*Logistics management-Oversees contract-to-provision procurement and automated servicing of connectivity, hardware and IoT devices, plus reverse logistics and endpoint resale.
*IoT connectivity management portal-Centralized interface for provisioning, change/incident/problem workflows, inventory, performance monitoring, rule-based SIM actions, automation, reporting and security settings.
*Service management and support-Tracks and manages network contracts, assets, and usage; audits performance and SLAs; optimizes expenses; governs service delivery; and provides multilevel technical and on-site support.
*SIM and subscription management-Enables over-the-air (OTA)
*Security management-Enforces identity, policy-based access, encryption and secure service consumption; includes change management, APN/VPN, private LTE/5G, security operations center (SOC) analytics and seamless handover.
Common features include device management, application management, multisourcing service integration, data and analytics, and private mobile networks interoperability, and more, as outlined in the full report.
Evaluation criteria
For Ability to Execute, "Gartner evaluates a provider's Ability to Execute in the managed IoT connectivity services market by assessing how effectively its processes, systems and service delivery meet the complex, global demands of modern connected enterprises," according to Gartner.
Gartner evaluation criteria for Ability to Execute puts "high" weighting on Customer Experience (including "how effectively products and support programs help clients achieve their desired business outcomes"), Sales Execution/Pricing, Product/Service (including "a provider's comprehensive portfolio of cellular, LPWAN, satellite and private network solutions alongside advanced eSIM orchestration," as well as "value-added IT services, robust partner ecosystems and proven innovation in AI/ML and security"), and Operations.
"Medium" weighting is placed on Market Responsiveness/Record and Marketing Execution.
For Completeness of Vision, Gartner evaluates "by assessing its ability to anticipate evolving enterprise requirements, shape market changes and drive innovation beyond baseline connectivity."
Gartner evaluation criteria puts "high" weighting on the following for Completeness of Vision: Market Understanding, Offering (Product) Strategy, Sales Strategy, Innovation, Vertical/Industry Strategy, and Geographic Strategy.
"Medium" weighting is placed on Marketing Strategy and Business Model.
