With tensions mounting on the world's seas and oceans and the spectre of asymmetric warfare looming on the horizon, maritime security is now a strategic imperative. On the Franco-British MMCM programme, Thales is combining drone technologies, cutting-edge sonars and artificial intelligence to provide the French Navy and the UK Royal Navy with the world's first autonomous mine countermeasures capability.

In this context, naval mines remain a formidable threat. Easy to deploy, inexpensive and hard to detect, they can cause lasting disruption to the free movement of shipping, block access to strategic ports and compromise the success of naval missions. Mine countermeasures are thus a critical capability for modern navies.
France and the United Kingdom have joined forces on the MMCM (Maritime Mine Counter Measures) programme managed by OCCAR, with the overarching goal of working together to keep naval personnel out of harm's way whenever possible.
With navies operating in increasingly contested waters, the MMCM concept keeps personnel at a safe distance from minefields at the same time as detecting and neutralising mines at longer stand-off ranges.
As the first fully autonomous mine countermeasures capability to enter service anywhere in the world, MMCM is a real game-changer for naval forces.
Leveraging a unique combination of advanced technologies, MMCM is capable of performing any type of minehunting operation, from detection and classification to geolocation, identification and neutralisation. Autonomous operation protects naval crews and reduces their exposure to danger while speeding up the decision-making cycle and shortening response times.
Thales's distinctive value proposition is its proven expertise across the entire data value chain, from capturing high-resolution sonar data to AI-driven classification, mission management and operational decision support - one of the few companies in the world with these end-to-end capabilities.
Thales expertise is a central pillar of the MMCM programme, in particular through the following technological building blocks:
- SAMDIS, a high-resolution sonar system capable of producing a detailed picture of the seabed from six different viewpoints in a single pass.
- MiMap, an AI-augmented data analytics solution that centralises, exploits and optimises data feeds to classify potential threats faster and more reliably.
- M-Cube, a dedicated mission management system for mission planning, tactical coordination, mission execution and post-mission analysis.
These advanced technologies significantly reduce the number of false alarms on mine countermeasures operations. With a classification rate of 99%, they guarantee more reliable threat identification and accelerate the tactical decision-making process - a key advantage in a field where speed is of the essence but certainty is an even more critical factor.
Solving the speed/certainty equation is the practical response to a structural problem in modern mine warfare. Speed is crucial because a potentially dangerous sea lane needs to be declared open in a matter of hours, not weeks. And certainty is critical because a false negative could expose an oil tanker to lethal danger, and a false positive could disrupt traffic for no valid reason.
After more than 4,000 hours of sea trials in demanding operational conditions, MMCM has proven itself as a robust, mature solution. Based on this feedback, the programme partners have now optimised the overall reliability and performance of the system.
Deliveries of the first MMCM systems to the French Navy and the UK Royal Navy are a prime illustration of how technological innovation leaves the R&D lab to become a strategic operational capability. Beyond these key milestones, MMCM successfully addresses the vital need to secure maritime approaches, protect critical infrastructure and guarantee freedom of navigation, while ensuring maritime dominance and the operational superiority of naval forces.
