He began his career in the investment industry in October of 1987 as a licensed broker at Makefield Securities Corporation, and was promoted soon thereafter to NASDAQ Over-the-Counter (OTC) trader and Registered Options Principal.
In 1988 he joined Darien Capital Management, Inc. as an Assistant Portfolio Manager for equity and fixed income derivatives before joining Rampart in 1991.
Mr. Markopolos is a past director of the Boston Chapter of the Global Association for Risk Professionals and sits on the board of directors for Boston QWAFAFEW, a quantitative finance lecture group.
He is President of the 4,000 member Boston Security Analysts Society.
Harry formerly taught courses in derivatives at the graduate level for the Boston Society’s CFA review program and occasionally guest lectures at Babson College, Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis University, and Suffolk University.
Mr. Markopolos is an Army R.O.T.C.
graduate of Loyola College of Maryland, where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration.
He served 17 years as a reserve officer in the US Army, serving as rifle platoon leader, support platoon leader, company executive officer, company commander, and special operations detachment commander leaving the service with the rank of Major.
He is a graduate of the US Army Infantry Officers’ Basic and Advanced Courses, the Special Warfare Center’s Civil Affairs Officers’ Advanced Course, and the US Army’s Command & General Staff College.
He obtained his Masters of Science Degree in Finance from Boston College and holds CFA Charter Number 22,743.
His research interests include implied volatility, volatility swaps, and alpha swaps and he has presented on the topics of "Trading Volatility as an Asset Class", "Derivatives Liquidity Risk", and "Risk Management for the Buy-Side".
